Difficulties “ Newbies” face with their online business

I have been a business owner and CEO of three different companies and have seen many people give up just when they were so close to success. Here are some of my observations as to what may cause new people to resign in their online business within a short space of time. If you are new to owning an online business then you may recognise a few of these traits.

Owning your first online business is exciting in the first few weeks of starting out until the hardwork and reality sinks in. The secret is keeping motivated, organised and a calm level head in order to move your business forward.

Your mentor should be there to aid you and guide you on the initial steps you need to take to get your business up and running from day one. Listen to them, they have gone through this before you and are more than qualified to guide you one your way.

Mentoring and Helping Yourself

First things first, you need to be in a position to help yourself. Although your mentor is there to guide you, they are not there to hold your hands every step of the way. After all you wouldn’t expect your employer to shadow you around the firm for the first few months would you? As long as you know where all the right resources are and these could be company forums, business coaches, handbooks, online tutorials and the like which again your mentor should have guided you through initially. If they do not manage to do this, then either drop them an email, or contact them through their preferred method.

Changing your Mindset

Now that you have your employer hat on, yes that’s right, you need to have an employer hat, absolutely essential. Owning your own online business is totally different to having a boss to tell you what you must do on a day to day basis. You need to change your current mindset and take your home business seriously, even if you are only working this part time, you need to ensure you have a full time attitude.

Business Planning

With your employer hat on, you need to start looking at your online business development strategy (or business plan). What are your goals and objectives, what is it you are trying to achieve in your online business. How, why and when? You need to understand this clearly before you strike out in any shape or form.

• What types of advertising are you going to do to market your online business? Costed versus uncosted advertising. How much money do you realistically have?
• How much advertising and how regularly do you need to do this?
• Who are your target audience for each advertising method you choose?

Once you have thought through your business plan you may wish to pass this to your mentor for feedback. You mentor should once they have your business plan, help you to put things in place to meet that plan. But, in all, it is down to you as the business owner to ensure you carry out the required action to move your business forward.

Personal Development and Training

As a new person you may think you have to read up on every book, course and online forum note before you can actively go out there an promote your business – wrong!
Things don’t have to be perfect before you start doing them. In fact, as you are learning and going along is the best way to generate meaningful training notes/videos/blogs.

Set aside time for training, this is important if you wish to not only change your mind set but to move ahead in your online business. But, don’t make the mistake of setting aside too much time for self development and training and not enough time for your business. This can cause inertia in any business and ultimately ‘death’… of your online business.

Inaction

So many recruits can fall into this trap of inaction if they are left to themselves. As I mentioned before it takes a certain type of mentality to work for yourself. You have to develop and grow. A few good books that may help are
a) Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill
b) The Twelve Pillars – Jim Rohn
c) Who Moved My Cheese – Spencer John MD

If you feel you are not doing anything constructive with your online business, speak to your mentor or your peers around you. Find a way to motivate yourself into action. Too many times, you hear about recruits getting disheartened after a number of months in, but if only they had the guts to stick it out a little longer, their rewards were just around the corner. Remember 97% of new online business start ups are doomed to fail – get into the 3% bracket…

Getting into Action

Equally important is setting aside time for your business. Many people will have started their business part time, with a view to making it full time in the not too distant future. If that is the case then make sure you are putting in serious part time hours in a very full time productive way.

Putting in 4 – 7 hours a week is an insult to your home business, you may as well treat this as a hobby, with the hope of getting some money now and then. If you want an online business to work you need to put in a lot of hours in the early stages, perhaps 10 – 12 or more hours a week. The early days in any online business are the hardest. People want to see results straight away, and sometimes the results do not happen like this if you do not put enough time, effort or action into your business.

In part two of this article I will write about what you can do as a mentor to ensure all of the above gets underway and that your new recruit excels in their new found online business, making you lots of residual income.

Postcard Marketing

Post card marketing is one of the simplest and easiest way to promoting a business whether online or off line. Many small businesses and even larger firms combine print advertising with online marketing to get the best results.

It’s cheaper than other print ad methods. Compared to other direct mail marketing and print ad methods, post card advertising is more cost-effective. You can even start with smaller-sized postcards to minimize your costs even more. It is easy and simple to design your own postcards and you can even print them on your own to cut back on the printing costs. You can either choose to deliver these by post, or to hand deliver them through letter boxes to save even more money.

Why Postcards: Have you noticed that Business letters from marketers often don’t get read. Why? I get so many of these and I don’t have time to read them, often people don’t even bother to open the envelopes. It is too bothersome for many people to sit and read a business letter, especially from an advertiser. Most people just throw out these mails. However, when most people get a post card they immediately tend to read it. Post cards definitely gives you the advantage to grab your customers attention and provoke their interest immediately.
Tracking Postcards: It is very important to track your postcards. You may have to try several different types and wording to see which gives you the best response. One way of doing this is by using the postcards as discount coupons where they can obtain a discount from you online. For each ad copy you use, use a different coupon code so you can track your results. Based on your sales with discounts, you can tell right away whether or not your postcard advertising campaign is successful.

What is Twitter?

Not too long ago (over 2 months now), I joined Twitter. I had heard about this social networking site and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Needless to say I got hooked after only a few days.

Its a great site to socialise, make links, meet new people from just about anywhere in the world. The land of Twitterville does not sleep, it is continiously active 24/7.

So what is this Twitter? What is it abbout?

You have 140 words in which to just through out to the world of Twitterland what your thoughts or views are. You could be listening to the radio and want to share the music you are listening to via weblink, you could be asking for advice, researching for a university paper, or looking for a job, yes that's right looking for a JOB on Twitter.

You can either 'follow' other people on twitter, this is where you can search out other like minded people via search menu or through other twitter members reccommendations. You can also be the person who is 'followed' by others who think your Bio is interesting.

Your Bio is short for your Biography which is a short description of what you are about.
In fact it can be used for just about any and everything if you can get it out in less than 140 words.

There is a grest sense of community on Twitter, and you feel a surge when you see your 'followers' go up in total.

You can build up your follows by recommending others, or like certain days (Fridays) you can reccommend to other who to follow by using the tweet description after their names "#followfriday".

There is a Tweet dictionary http: //twittonary.com/ which is really useful to learn what the meaning of words beginning with a # are.

There are also many applications you can use to enter your tweets onto Twitter. I use a combination of three, Power Twitter, Tweetdeck and Twitter itself. I find them all useful in their own different ways.

Power Twitter allows me to follow people automatically and to send a response back to them straight away, which is always nice to be acknowledged on Twitter. I can also set up automated tweets which I can schedule to go out at different times in the day. Great for networking, building a business or giving advise and tips.
I can also view my replies all in one place and respond back quickly.

Tweetdeck - allows you to see different views all at once. I can see my replied, my followers, and whats being tweeted all at once in one screen, where as in the other applications I have to select them seperately.

You can upload videos, photos as well, and I do not think it is as invasive as myspace or facebook which I believe are on another level of social networking anyway.

These are only my views, so why not check it out for yourself. Youcan follow me on twitter by clicking here

Setting up Your Home Office

As more and more of us take to having a ‘hobby business’ or online business working from home, many more people are utilising their kitchens, dining rooms and other household space as their home office.

Employers are now looking at how they can reduce building costs and rental space by introducing flexible working patterns and locations. In the next 5 – 10 years home working will not be as unique as it seems to be now.

Health and Safety

There are health and safety aspects which need to be considered by those who would wish to ‘work at home’. The work space needs to be set up in such a way that you are comfortable working in that area for a few hours per day.

Location

For many people it is a new concept to work from home, as such some thought needs to go into the location of your home office. Your office needs to be away from noise to maintain a professional environment, especially if

you are going to be working offline on the telephone.

Your office can be set up in your spare room. Make sure it is a comfortable environment for you to be working in as you will have to be there for several hours of the day.

Ensure you have adequate room to put your files, documents and equipment in, there is nothing worse that having your documents or equipment in another part of your home, and they are not easily to hand.

Equipment

Installing a second home line can be an option to ensure that you keep your business number separate from the family house phone. This can be costly to maintain two lines, so you would need to look around to find suitable providers. Alternately, you may wish to purchase an online telephone number and divert this to your mobile phone. Or installing a ‘VOIP’ phone onto your lap top or desk top as an alternative.

When looking at the equipment required such as printers, laptops, desk tops, scanners, phones, internet access. Consider buying a three in one, printer, scanner and fax machine, as this will take up less space.

Lap tops vs desk tops is another issue you may wish to consider. Depending on whether your business can be conducted anywhere globally you may wish to think of purchasing a light weight laptop as this will not only create less space, but can serve a dual purpose if you need to travel but keep in touch with your home business.

Office Hours

Choosing your office hours is important. What times of the day do you wish to work. The great thing about home working is you can decide what your office hours are, as you do not have a boss….

However, it does require discipline to work set hours and to be consistent and productive.

Prepare yourself for working from home by ensuring you do a to do list each day and tick of what you have or have not achieved. A sense of ‘having done some work’ is better than not having a record of what you have completed and then looking back at your ‘wasted day’.

Letting your family know what your working hours are, is equally important. I know when I first started working from home, my mum and my friends constantly called me and wanted to chat during the ‘day time work hours’. I was also seen as someone who could go and do the adhoc jobs because I was ‘at home’. Making it very clear to friends and family that your working hours are for instance 10am – 3pm,means that you will not be able to take calls unless they are of the utmost urgency during that time, and that no visiting to be made within those core working hours. Setting the rules, avoids frustrations from yourself and upsets.

There you have it, some useful tips for home working, please share if you have any others.
